Safety Considerations and Contraindications

  • These guidelines (Please see Know the Guidelines section) are for singleton pregnancies and require clinical judgment. It is recommended to discuss issues of weight gain, diet, and exercise with patients.
  • Extra calories needed during pregnancy are determined by pre-pregnancy weight. Women should never try to lose weight while pregnant.
  • 20% of pregnant women gain 40 pounds or more, which is more than any pregnant women should gain, regardless of BMI.
  • Healthy weight gain is related to nutrition before and during pregnancy; consult the Healthy Eating CME for information about nutrition guidelines and recommendations during pregnancy.
