Know the Guidelines

Guidelines and current recommendations for healthy weight based on pre–pregnancy BMI (3):

  • For underweight women with a BMI of < 18.5, recommended weight gain is 28 – 40 pounds.
  • For women of a healthy weight with a BMI of 18.5 – 24.9, recommended weight gain is 25 – 35 pounds.
  • For overweight women with a BMI of 25 – 29, recommended weight gain is 15 – 25 pounds.
  • For obese women with a BMI of > 30, recommended weight gain is 11 – 20 pounds.

Guidelines and current recommendations for healthy weight gain per–trimester (2, 3, 4):

  • For all BMI categories it is recommended to gain between 1 and 4.5 pounds during the first trimester.
  • If BMI is < 18.5 – 24.9, recommended weight gain is 0.8 – 1.3 pounds per week in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
  • If BMI is 25 – 29, recommended weight gain is 0.5 – 0.7 pounds per week in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
  • If BMI is > 30, recommended weight gain is 0.4 – 0.6 pounds per week in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
